The Nebraska defense made a resounding statement during the Huskers’ 10-3 victory over Oklahoma on Saturday by holding the Sooners with zero touchdowns for the first time in the Bob Stoops era. Not only did the defensive domination impress fans and media around the country but with a few prospects as well. Right off the bat Sunday, the Huskers were able to grab commitments from three major high school standouts, who (go figure) all play on the defensive side of the ball. In only his second season as head man it’s obvious Bo Pelini has already established himself as one of the best defensive minds in all of college football.
The first commitment came from a player the Huskers have been going after for some time in Aldine, TX defensive tackle Jay Guy. Rated a three star recruit by rivals.com and a four by scout, Guy turned down some true national powerhouses in order to become a part of the new stout Husker defense. Some of Guy’s notable offers were Michigan, Cal, Ole Miss, UCLA, Missouri, Stanford as well as many others. Listed as 6’1, 300 pound, the Texas product already has good size and will bring even more depth to a stacked Nebraska defensive line.

Soon after the commitment of Guy came the pledge of Corona, CA cornerback Joshua Mitchell. Also listed as a three star by rivals.com, Mitchell was impressive last year as a junior, racking up 74 total tackles as well as an interception. After making his verbal commitment to Bo Pelini, Mitchell made it known that the atmosphere, the team’s play and the school’s academics all played a major part in his commitment. By joining the Big Red, Mitchell passed on offers from Washington State, UTEP, San Diego State, Colorado State and Idaho.

Once again, just hours after Mitchell threw his name into the mix, so did Plymouth, MN defensive end recruit Tobi Okuyemi. Rated as the fifth best player for the state of Minnesota by rivals.com, Okuyemi came up big for his Wayzata High School team his junior year by totaling 58 tackles (17 for loss) and nine sacks. Also listed as a three star, Okuyemi turned down offers from most notably Michigan, Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan State and Kansas.

Also news broke earlier today that the Huskers received a commitment from Lincoln Southeast lineman Jake Cotton. While I’m happy for the kid it’s hard to get past the fact that Jake is the son of Nebraska offensive line coach Barney Cotton. Barney’s son Ben is also on the team but Ben had many division one offers and was once a commit to the University of Louisville. Jake’s other biggest offers so far this season are from Northwest Missouri State and Nebraska-Omaha. I hope the move pays off for the Huskers but it is a bit questionable with several big names still considering Nebraska and the team only taking a few more commitments in this years class.
