During Tuesday's press conference, head coach Bo Pelini addressed several issues regarding the Huskers victory over Missouri as well as their upcoming game against Texas Tech. In typical Bo Pelini fashion, the coach didn't go into great detail but stressed the importance of playing all four quarters and also noted how reassured how confident he is in Shawn Watson's offense. Pelini also stated that the team will have to play as well as possible to slow down a trigger happy Texas Tech offense.
One of the unsung heroes of last Thursday's game was true freshman running back Rex Burkhead. It was Burkhead's quick juke on a Missouri defender that allowed him to get a pivotal first down on the Husker's first scoring drive that ended in a 56 yard touchdown pass from Zac Lee to Niles Paul. However unfortunately for the Big Red, Pelini confirmed rumors of an injury to Burkhead on Tuesday after he was spotted with a boot and crutches on Monday. Pelini didn't go into much detail on the injury simply noting that Rex will be out a while with a foot injury.
Until Burkhead is able to return, it will be an all out battle as to who will become Roy Helu's compliment in the backfield. The backs who have the best chance of seizing the opportunity will be Austin Jones, Lester Ward, Marcus Mendoza and a sleeper being Omaha native Collins Okafor. The lost of Burkhead is a fairly big blow to the offense, however if the Huskers can get past Texas Tech, the team should breeze through the next two games against Iowa State and Baylor while hopefully Burkhead will be able to return in a month for the much anticipated match up with Oklahoma on November 7.
