As a Republic, that’s what we are, not a Democracy, we have elected officials that vote on our behalf. That is what the founding fathers decided because they had faith in Congress to vote how their constituents see fit, not based on their own personal beliefs or gain.
That clearly is not what is happening lately.
Congressman Peter Roskam (R-IL) said it best. “Tonight’s vote is incredibly disappointing, though just the latest example that Democrats simply aren’t listening to Americans."
After a charged summer of town hall meetings, where critics of the proposed health care reform were vilified as “crazies” by our media and the elected officials themselves, a majority of the House of Representatives decided to pass the 1990 page bill.
1990 pages?! That is longer than most books, and far too long for any “busy” Congressman to read, and yet they passed it.
It should be law that all Congressmen must read each and every bill they pass, and state that under oath. If such a law was created and they faced the possibility of being charged with perjury, maybe they’d stop intruding in our lives with all these ridiculous bills they propose.
1990 pages is not reform, it’s a mutation, into a much larger, scarier and unpredictable monster.
Most good conservatives, whether Republican or Democrat, would state that all should have some sort of health care to ensure a healthy lifestyle. We have the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. There has to be an easier way to make healthcare an attainable option for all.
Here is one good idea, we're sure the insurance lobbyists are against, and therefore, Congress is too; open the state lines and let us shop for our insurance throughout the nation, not just in the state where we reside.
Where’s Teddy Roosevelt when we need him? We need the trustbuster again. If there were real competition between insurance companies, throughout this great land, prices would come down and insurance would be affordable for most.
It’s better to be an Illegal Immigrant... in this bill at least.
Only in our country where bleeding hearts worry about everyone, including those who do not belong here, would a bill be passed that states that illegal immigrants are exempt from paying fines.
In section 59b of the bill, it states that all Americans when filing their taxes will have to provide proof that they have health insurance. If they don’t, they can be fined several thousand dollars.
Of course, the poor illegal immigrants, who are here illegally, are exempt from such an outrageous fine. Why should they pay a fine? They don’t belong here.
That must be their reasoning for it.
An attempt to trick conservatives?
Late on Saturday before the bill was passed, a restriction on elective abortions was added. Through this restriction, federal subsidies for such abortions would be blocked.
While a small victory for Conservatives, is this some attempt to get Pro-Life groups to now support this bill and forget about everything else that is wrong with it? Grandma might still have a problem with this bill, even if she is happy that tax dollars won’t go to the abortions she opposes.
Everyone pray that the Senate will take their responsibilities a little bit more seriously than the House and say nay to this bill, start from scratch and make some real reform.
