Young people; conservative or liberal, listen up. In this age of social networking, digital cameras, twitter, cell phone cameras, etc, you can destroy your future.
Case in point. Conservatives, and religious types, for the past few months have had an individual in which to rally around against the intolerance of supposedly tolerant liberals(We say that, as we've seen often how liberals only want their views to be respected, but then attack the morals and standards of conservatives.) in former Miss California Carrie Prejean.
The gay marriage debate began boiling again when Carrie Prejean was asked by Perez Hilton whether she agreed that all states should follow Vermont and allow gay marriage. When Prejean gave her personal, honest answer, Hilton decided she wasn't good enough to be Miss USA, which was seen as discrimination against conservative Christians.
Subsequently, Ms. Prejean's contract with Ms. California was terminated for various reasons. Prejean then went on to sue the Miss California Pageant for religious discrimination. Up until today, she had a good case, until the lawyer for Miss Calirfonia allegedly produced a XXX home video of Ms. Prejean doing a solo sex act. She has now dropped her case and owes a lot in legal fees.
20 years ago and beyond, a simple home video or erotic home pictures might not destroy a career, but today, with the speed at which information, video and pictures travel around the world, your actions caught on any media form is just waiting to be accessed by the entire world.
It's not just youngsters who are being totally careless in the garbage they post for the world to see. We've seen countless instances in which teachers, nurses, doctors, lawyers and other professional types post totally unprofessional pictures and statements online. Just because you hit the delete button doesn't mean those items disappear. They are floating out there for someone to find.
When will they find it? When your career is about to take off. It could be fifty years from now that one is running for public office, going for a promotion or filing a lawsuit and then the skeletons of your past come back to haunt you, destroying your credibility.
Be careful what you do for a camera. Better yet, conduct yourself with proper decorum at all times so as not to be caught in a compromising position. That sounds incredibly impossible to do, but it's the price we pay for having information at our fingertips.
