Today 750 girls woke up at the crack of dawn in an attempt to spice up the plain gray t-shirt that they are required to wear. And spice-up means bows-galore, brightly colored shoes, and loud jewelry. It takes skill to make a gray t-shirt stand out amongst the other 749.
A comical stress is high. From the front steps of Stacy Riddle Forum you can hear “Dang it, I shouldn’t have eaten that Taquito” and “I shouldn’t have laughed when they told me I would lose my voice.” Mints are popped and bathroom lines are long. It is officially Fall Parties time.
Fall Parties is the first stage of Baylor University sorority rush. Potential new members (PNMs) spend 30 minutes in each of the 9 Panhellenic sorority rooms. They are met with cheers telling them to Think Theta and told they’ll be shown why we love Pi Beta Phi. Sorority girls are enthusiastic inside and even confess they can’t help but shout it, I’m a Baylor Alpha Delta Pi.
Inside the rooms, each sorority performs a series of rewritten songs that both confess their love for each PNM and encourage them to admit they Want to be a Tri-delt or whatever sorority they believe is heaven-sent. Each sorority has a personality that is showcased in front of wide-eyed PNMs.
The movement from room to room is a mechanical process and runs like clockwork. Lined in alphabetical order, girls have a 15-minute waiting period in between parties that allow the sororities to regroup. Oh the hardships of the Baylor rush process.
Rush will continue until January when the PNMs will participate in 3 days of Formal Rush. Until then, PNMs will probably think the sorority girls are always watching them even when they aren’t. The goal, however, is that bridges of solid relationships would be built over the semester.
As defined by Baylor “The mission of the Baylor Greek Community is to enhance the college experience of fraternity men and women through programs, involvement, and leadership opportunities.”
The intentional rush process ensures that each girl calls the right sorority home. The Baylor process is ideal: girls see the sororities in the fall and they have the remainder of the semester to decide where they fit.
Party. Noun: a social gathering of invited guests. During Fall Parties, all girls are invited.
