Most of the public has been unaware that the U.S. Army has been working on a plan since 2008 to take the combat vehicles "green."
Ricardo, Inc., "the leading independent provider of technology, product innovation and engineering solutions to the world's automotive, defense, transport and new energy industries," has been awarded a contract to spearhead the project that will take our Army combat vehicles into the 21st century.
Ricardo, Inc., located in Michigan, has been working with FED (Fuel Efficient Ground Vehicle Demonstrator) since late 2008.
The FED program, launched in late 2008, has the long term goals of improving military vehicle technology, reducing fuel consumption on the battlefield, and reducing the nation's dependence on oil.
Ricardo will apply its expertise in the development and manufacture of special vehicles and advanced automotive technology to create a demonstration vehicle that maximizes fuel economy while maintaining the capability and performance of light tactical wheeled vehicles.
Of course, Ricardo Inc is thrilled to have been awarded such a huge contract. The next step is focusing on the detailed design of a demonstration vehicle. The project will ultimately produce a demonstration vehicle for testing at the U.S. Army's Aberdeen Proving Ground.
The ultimate goal is to produce vehicles for the military that will reduce the total life cycle costs and have a more positive impact on the environment at the same time.
