The Yes Men Fix the World, a movie recently released in select theatres nationwide, is the biggest effort yet from anti-corporate pranksters the Yes Men to make the world a better place through socially conscious stunts.
Corporate America has long enjoyed impunity for its high crimes, both in the actual legal system and in the court of public opinion. The Yes Men, activists, agitators, pranksters, and protesters general of all abuses corporate in nature, hope to change the minds of the jury for both sets of courts.
Through ingenius and hilarious stunts, Yes Men Andy Bichlbaum and Mike Bonanno examine the ascendence of free market ideology and the ramifications of putting profits before people.
Perhaps their best known prank has been impersonating a spokesperson from Dow Chemical on the BBC, finally claiming credit for the Bhopal catastrophe in India which resulted in the deaths of over 20,000 people. As a result of their claim of responsibility, the Dow Chemical stock price dropped by two billion dollars in value.
Recently, Andy Bichlbaum posed as a representative from the United States Chamber of Commerce and reversed the organization's outdated position on climate change.
The Yes Men Fix the World gathers the best of their pranks together in one place, resulting in a movie that is informative, anger-inducing, and funny, all at the same time. The movie, and the continued work of the Yes Men against free-market ideology's corruption, prove that satire and wit are still vital tools in the fight against corporate power.
