Although illegal in every state in this country, dogfighting is becoming increasingly popular in Afghanistan.  In a country lacking entertainment venues, for many Afghans, watching and betting on dogfighting matches fills the void.

During Taliban rule, dogfighting was denounced as un-Islamic, and banned.  But today, with the Taliban receding from power, dogfighting is on the rise.

American and Afghan dogfights both have money and bravado at stake, but beyond that there is little in common.  In America, dogfights usually involve pit bulls fighting to a bloody death.  In Afghanistan, the dogs are of a muscular mastiff breed.  The fights are short, ending when one dog pins another down.

The sport appears to be in deciding which dogs will fight each other and how much money will ride on which matches.  Because the fights are so quick, dozens of matches can occur in one afternoon.  Thousands of onlookers watch as dogs are let loose, slapped for encouragement, then pulled back after the dominant dog has won.

The question is, what happens to the dog who loses?

Dogs of the week:  Slideshow below!
San Francisco SPCA:
Scooby (A06950345):  I am an 8 year old terrier mix.  I move a bit more slowly than I did in my younger days, so I am looking for a quiet, mellow home.  I can’t see very well anymore, so I need a little guidance from the person on the other end of the leash.  Despite this, I really enjoy going on walks.  Another favorite activity of mine is just hanging out at home.  If you need a buddy for TV watching, snuggling on the couch, or just napping, I might be your guy!

Teddy(A08919762): I am a 9 year old lab mix.  My previous owner said that she didn't have time for me anymore, so I was left at the shelter.  I don't understand why - I'm a sweet, loving guy who enjoys being around just about everyone!  Kids, cats, other dogs - you name it, I get along with it.  My favorite thing in the world is playing with toys, especially the plushy ones.  I would be prefectly happy to carry a toy around with me all day!  In my previous life, I lived in the backyard, but this time around, I'm looking for the good life - hanging out indoors with my people and going outside to play or go on walks.  If you have a cozy couch and an open heart, please consider taking me home.  I promise to reward you with heaps of love and snuggles.

Shane
2-year-old
Neutered Male, 12lbs
Spitz Mix

Shane has more spunk packed in to his small frame than many dogs see in a lifetime! He is vivacious and charming, manipulative and clever. If this sounds like your kind of trouble, do read on! Shane appears to be a spitz mix of some kind, maybe even American Eskimo. However, an argument could also be made for the elegant Papillon. Either way, he is a high energy sprite. He is a whole lot of fun packed into a small package. He could go mountain biking, hiking, jogging or just play fetch on the beach. The common thread though is a lot of activity is required. Shane is basically the joy of life all bundled up with fur and bright, brown eyes! Enjoy!

Ideal Home: Best in a home with children 16 years or older

Tanker
8-year-old
Neutered Male, 82lbs
German Shorthaired Pointer

Tanker is a magnificent representation of his breed. His nickname is "sweet cheeks" because of his cute, puffy jowls. If you are looking for a cool dog and have a relaxed lifestyle, take a few minutes and spend it with Tanker. He has a playful trot and will quickly win your hearts. His biggest joy is being with humans and wants to settle down - he'd prefer not to share his new home with other dogs. Spending quality time bonding with your new canine friend is priceless. Tanker is in his prime and wants nothing more than to share his life with you!
