From a Peninsula Humane Society press release:
November 22, 2009 (San Mateo) – The Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA (PHS/SPCA) invites high school students to explore two distinct, but related animal welfare career paths this December. PHS/SPCA is holding a Humane Officer Program on December 4 and Veterinary Shadow Program on Dec. 22 and December 30.
The Humane Officer Program, 4-6 pm on December 4, will give local high school students a first-hand look at the work popularized in the Animal Planet’s “Animal Cops” television show. Participants will learn how officers protect animals from harm and how they assist animals and people. They will find out what skills are necessary in this line of work, check out equipment used on the job and hear about recent rescues in our community involving domestic animals and wildlife.
Participants in the two-hour Humane Officer Program will also get a sense of how evidence is collected for humane investigations and how PHS/SPCA works with San Mateo County’s District Attorney’s Office, which prosecutes animal abusers.
Aspiring veterinarians can get an inside look at veterinary medicine in an animal shelter setting in one of PHS/SPCA’s two Vet Shadow Programs: December 22 or December 30, 10 am to Noon. Participants will hear about the background and experiences of a shelter veterinarian, observe spay/neuter surgeries, take a tour of the shelter’s in-house clinic and x-ray room, question the vet and learn about the medical conditions common to shelter work.
Space is very limited for both programs and students must sign up in advance. Please contact Katy in the Education Department at 650/340-7022, ext. 308 or kschwarz@PHS-SPCA.org for a reservation or more information. PHS/SPCA is not charging participants for either class but a $15 donation is suggested.
