A note to readers: The environmental information contained in the following story is entirely accurate. However, the encounter described is entirely fabricated.
So my friend and I stuck in afternoon traffic trying to get bsack on the Pali and arguing about whether wine bottles are recyclable when I look over at the school crossing guard and realize it’s Jack Johnson.
“Hey, Jack,” I asked, “what are you doing as a crossing guard.”
“What do you think,” he answered, “just because I’ve released five successful albums and draw a crowd wherever I play, I’m too good to be a crossing guard every Tuesday and Thursday?”
“Hadn’t thought about it,” I answered, “but can you help us solve an argument? Are wine bottle recyclable here in O’ahu?”
“They sure are,” he said. “you can recycle all kinds of glass containers including bottles for wine and liquor and jars for food. Just leave off the tops and lids and put them in your blue recycle bin.”
I’d been arguing the other side, so I didn’t thank him, but now I feel bad about that. Jack was right.
