The virgin Mary is giving the visionaries of Medjugorje ten secrets each. But because she speaks to them on an individual basis, they don't all receive the secrets at the same time. Once a visionary has been told all ten secrets, she no longer appears to that person on a daily basis, but rather, once a year. So far, the three visionaries Mirjana, Ivanka, and Jakov have ten secrets, and Ivan, Marija and Vicka each have 9 secrets.
Secrets for everyone
The ten secrets are not the same for all the visionaries. For example, a few of the visionaries were given some of the general secrets, plus one or more that pertain to them alone. However, the ten secrets that Mirjana received will be revealed to the whole world. Thus, there are ten events that pertain to everyone.
Why are they secret?
Ten things will happen to the world. When the first few secrets begin to happen, people will realize that this is not a hoax. Many of these are calamities that humans have brought upon themselves, but some aspects of these calamities can change. For example, if people pray, convert and make amendments, a disaster can happen to less people, can last for a shorter period of time, be less severe, or maybe even be avoided altogether.
Events of this magnitude are scary enough to affect the mental stability of a number of people. Our Lady does not want the faithful to obsess about dreadful events. Instead, people should spend all their mental energy on prayer and leading good lives. Time spent continuously thinking about a woe that has not yet happened is time better spent taking care of daily duties, praying, or helping others to avoid negative eternal consequences.
If it helped everyone to know the secrets, they wouldn't be secret. Knowing the secrets does not help at all to prepare for them. It probably does the opposite. But the virgin Mary does tell us what will help. And that is why she sends public messages twice a month.
Timing is everything
'After the first admonition, the others will follow in a rather short time and people will have little time for conversion.'
The visionaries urge everyone to convert as quickly as possible. And they have been saying this since 1981, because hopefully, by the time the first secret happens, the whole world will at least have heard of Medjugorje. The message is urgent for a few good reasons:
1) The sooner more people pray, the lesser the calamities.
2) The first secret could be four days away.
3) 'For many it will be too late.' Individual death may come sooner, or the world might experience a massive natural disaster and whoever is left may finally be ready to listen.
Moreover, tying up loose ends takes time and effort. But this message should not be confused with something similar to a terminal illness diagnosis. The reader might be tempted to make 100-crazy-things-to-do-before-die list. And that is not the intention of the Medjugorje message. It is actually the opposite. Instead of living life for vain purposes, the faithful are called to do something of real spiritual value for their own good and the good of everyone else.
