Having Fun In Las Vegas was originally started by partners John Owens, Michele Roberts, and Linda Blaney. Blaney, also known as Having Fun Linda, decided that free was the best option for her since she wasn't a businesswoman. That is when the idea for the Having Fun meetup arose and it was founded on January 27, 2008.
Having Fun Linda tries to encourage at least one event per day so her members can meet new friends. The reasoning behind this is if someone is having a bad day, they can go out to an event to meet new people to take their mind off things. Her philosophy is, "No one wants to be sad and alone."
The most successful meetups she's had in her two years in existence have been her Oscar Nights and her Date Nights. The Oscar Nights are set up in much the same way as a real awards night. The members are asked to nominate their friends for various awards including friendliest, funniest, best pick up artist, best legs, best dancer, etc. Once the winners were voted upon and notified, she set up an event where everyone dressed up like they were going to a real awards ceremony. Her Date Nights are successful in part due to the cheapness of the activity. She charges $3 instead of the $30 or $40 charged by local speed dating companies.
Having Fun Linda says that it isn't the amount of people that attend a particular event, but the quality of the people attending the event itself. For example, she had a James Bond-themed party where everyone dressed up as their favorite Bond character that was attended by just 7 people. Everyone had a great time because, in typical Having Fun Linda fashion, she made sure that everyone was comfortable. She does this by making sure everyone is talking so if she sees you by yourself, she'll grab you and lead you to someone else to help initiate a conversation. As she says, "We are all here for the same reason and that is to make friends and have fun."
She goes by the Internal Revenue Service standards when it comes to individuals that can join her group. It is her belief that until a ring is on your finger, the government considers you single and so does she. If you are in a relationship, she says, "There is no problem bringing your significant other to an event."
Having Fun In Vegas meetup has had many successful events but there are certain places that Having Fun Linda will not deal with in the future. The first one is the Rio pool where the members of the group kept getting hassled by members of the staff. The second one she won't deal with although she loves the place is Hofbrauhaus. She says that it is a great place to party but they don't believe in doing separate checks which created a problem for some members that didn't bring cash to the event.
