When I taught school in the Elk Grove district of California, every time a new school was built, a group of Freemasons would come to the building site and perform a cornerstone-laying ceremony. I know for a fact that these cornerstones are clearly visible at Harriet Eddy, Calvine High, and Laguna Creek High. I assume they're elsewhere too but those are the ones I've seen.

Their presence isn't common knowledge, and I found it really interesting that Masons would dedicate each school but the students almost without exception never learn a thing about the Freemasons' profound role in the development of the United States. Considering that five of the first seven presidents were masons, you'd think a little more attention might be drawn to their influence. George Washington was a 33rd degree "Master Mason--and the Washington Monument is a large-scale obelisk, a phallic symbol from ancient Egypt representing the male creative power--an apt symbol for an all male secret society. When the base for the Washington Monument was laid, Masons held a grand ceremony during which they sealed items pertaining to Masonry, which are still there. Traditional obelisks are made from single pieces of stone and can be found at many old cemeteries across the United States. Graves marked with obelisks are typically those of Freemasons. I've seen several obelisks from the street as I've driven by the old Sacramento cemetery on Broadway.

Masonic signs are clearly visible on our money. A look at the reverse of the Great Seal reveals a strange pyramid with Latin written on it. The pyramid's missing capstone is replaced by an illuminated eye, which is the Egyptian "Eye of Osiris" or all-seeing eye of wisdom. The inscription "Annuit Coeptis" above the eye means "the heavens approve" in the sense of manifest destiny: God approves our subjugation and exploitation of the New World. Under the pyramid are the words "Novus Ordo Seclorum" which translates as a "New Order of the Ages," frighteningly similar to George "Pappy" Bush's introduction of the New World Order.

A couple of other Masonic symbols might surprise you that aren't so obvious. Do you know that funny-looking outfit they make graduates wear at grad ceremonies? Consider that the odd flat hat is called a "mortarboard" (stonemasons use mortar to cement bricks and stones). It is clearly a Masonic symbol. Masons established the University system in this country. What's more, diplomas were originally made of sheepskin, which is another Masonic symbol often worn as their ceremonial aprons.
The Masons may very well do good work. The Masonic "Shriners" Hospitals are godsends to many children and their families around the world, and I don't want to disparage their efforts. I just find it strange that the Masons have had and continue to have so much influence on society yet relatively few know of their existence.
