The holidays are an exciting, fun and festive time of year... my favorite! But with the holidays come our hectic schedules, crowded shopping centers and too many calorie laden parties and lavish dinners. The holidays are so full of to-do lists above and beyond our normal routines, it seems unfathomable to think you can maintain any reasonable fitness routine and avoid gaining the average 7 lbs between Thanksgiving and New Year's.
With this survival guide comes tips to help you plan and make it possible to blast as many calories as you need to during this very busy time. The smartest approach is to set realistic fitness goals and do your best to stick to them.
In addition to your good eating habits throughout the season and being very selective with your holiday indulgences, exercise is the key step that will ensure a minimal impact of those food choices. Exercise will help you avoid the weight gain and keep you feeling energized all season long.
Scheduling your workouts ahead of time will put you in front of your hectic calendar. Each week simply take a peak at the week ahead and fit in your group exercise classes, sessions with a trainer or a run with a friend. Fit them anywhere, lunch time, early AM before work and weekends. As your calendar fills up, your workouts are already scheduled!
Be ware, as with any plan, something always seems to pop up and spoil even the best of intentions. When you're short on time, instead of canceling the workout all together, just workout smarter. There are many activities you can do in 30-45 minutes and blast tons of calories!
A few to try:
- an express spin class at lunch
- a 45 minute kickboxing session
- any Jillian Micheals DVD
- inline skating with the kids at the rink
- join a winter league of tennis and racquetball
-shoot some hoops with friends in the driveway
One thing to remember with these shorter sweat sessions is to find an activity or a way to pump up the intensity to boost your metabolism and increase your calorie burn. With the extra calories you'll be eating this season, you'll need it!
Enjoy your holidays!
