As many as twenty people stood by and watched a gang rape in Richmond, California, Saturday night, police said today. Richmond is in the eastern San Francisco Bay Area, about 20-minutes north of Oakland.
The victim was a 15-year-old girl who was returning from a homecoming dance. Police believe that as many as seven people participated in the attack. They have offered a $20,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of anyone who participated in the crime.
Police believe the assault lasted for about two hours. A 19-year-old man and a 15-year-old boy have been arrested.
According to the Contra Costa Times, the victim became vulnerable to the attack after she followed a classmate into a secluded and dark area. She joined a group of young people who were drinking and became incapacitated after drinking brandy quickly, the paper reports.
The girl is recovering in a hospital, in stable condition.
