The dark side of Waianae has been revealed in a previous article;(http:// /www.examiner.com/examiner/x-27741-Waianae-Coast-Examiner~y2009m10d31-Dark-side-of-the-Waianae-Coast-of-Hawaii) but there is another side to the westernmost part of Oahu on the Leeward side. Fishing enthusiasts might know that the name Waianae means “mullet water.”
Waianae’s bright side includes the beautiful panorama of sights, friendly people, children playing and the awesome sea life. It’s not a tourist spot but some of the local attractions include: Waianae Mall Shopping Center, Waianae Kai Military Reservation Beach, Waianae Regional Park, Pililaau Community Park and Nene‘u Beach.
Driving along the Farrington Hwy are stretches of wonderful beach scenes, parks and little hideaways here you can stop and enjoy the beauty of Waianae.
The Waianae Mountains (check out the slideshow), is a fantastic climb for avid hikers. It has lots of little trails and at night the mountains are lit up with thousands of little white lights that sparkle in the dark. The Waianae Mountains are the eroded remains of an ancient shield volcano and was created from one single volcano.
During the summer months the community participates in Sunset on the Beach. Families, singles gather on Maili Beach to enjoy music from local artists, fireworks and great food. It’s a community gathering not to be missed.
The bright side of Waianae offers anyone the chance to commune with nature, enjoy the glorious parks and beaches, fish, surf and swim. No everything in this paradise is dark and forbidding. Some things in Waianae bring enormous joy.
