"I'm glad I did it, partly because it was worth it, but mostly because I never shall have to do it again." Mark Twain
I've been on a short break from writing for the last couple weeks but more columns very soon. In the meantime, I've become a devoted fan of comic Mark Malkoff, a guy after my own New York heart who works for the "Colbert Nation".
This one became a minor YouTube sensation back when it posted last summer, but I'd never heard of it until now. Perhaps you missed it too. I think it's a perfect video replication of what the last two-plus year transit of Saturn through Virgo felt like for many people.
On other occasions Mark has moved into an Ikea store for a week, traveled 135 consecutive flight segments on AirTran to overcome his fear of flying, and is currently driving across America to see how many "keys to the city" mayors will give him. At last count he had 94.
You can find more of his escapades at www.markmalkoff.com.
One more rabid, unrelenting cultural crush I've developed that my girlfriend will just have to deal with...
Disclaimer: I believe in supporting small, locally-owned currently-under-economic-siege cafes whenever possible. In fact, here's a plug for one of the coolest, underpublicized spots ever, Julie's Tea Garden in Alameda. Live music Tuesday nights, divine chai, organic salads and soups, and more. Oh, and great coffee. Lush, magical garden in the back with WiFi.
Just try to match that, Starbucks.
