Maryland’s Lieutenant Governor Anthony Brown along with Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) volunteers will be at Maryland Food Bank today, October 20th,  to bring awareness to the hunger problem in Maryland. They will help package food items for needy Marylanders. Maryland’s Lieutenant Governor will address the staff and volunteers on the issue of hunger in the state. The goal is to end childhood hunger in Maryland by 2015.

Starting at the end of September KFC started closing locations throughout the country so they could feed the hungry. We are talking 15,000 locations during the lunch and temporarily change them to “World Hunger Relief” kitchens. They will feed needy families grilled chicken dinners. As one blogger questioned, are they making amends for the double down sandwich which has cheese and bacon sandwiched between two fried chicken patties.

In 2007, Yum! Brands, parent company to KFC, launched its annual World Hunger Relief campaign, the world’s largest private sector hunger relief effort to raise awareness, volunteerism and funds to benefit the United Nation’s World Food Programme (WFP) and other hunger relief agencies. Since World Hunger Relief launched in 2007, more than 1 million of the company’s employees, franchisees and their families have volunteered more than 9 million hours to aid hunger relief efforts in communities worldwide. The effort has raised $36 million for WFP and other hunger relief organizations and is helping to provide approximately 160 million meals and save the lives of about 4 million people in remote corners of the world.

Whole Foods in Mt. Washington, Harbor East and Annapolis will donate five percent of net sales on Wednesday, October 21st will go directly to the Maryland Food Bank. Representatives and volunteers from the Maryland Food Bank will be at the store during the day providing shoppers with information on its programs and mission and activities.
