The benefits of exercise are plentiful. When we exercise

  • Our mood improves
  • We have an increased self-esteem
  • We have an increased mental focus
  • Our energy levels are enhanced
  • We are able to sleep better
  • We look better and physically feel better
  • We enhance our sexuality
  •  We decrease the possibility of acquiring certain illnesses and diseases
  • The flow of blood in our body improves, which subsequently improves the functions of our bodily organs

Although many of us have been able to make exercise a regular part of our daily lives, we have the tendency to become complacent in our select exercise routines. In the early morning, we can be found at the LA Fitness gym trying to burn calories we acquired from last night's dinner, before heading into the office. After work, we can be found rubbing shoulders with others and trying to avoid the crowds, while running or walking around Lake Merritt. On the weekends, we can be found hiking or mountain biking on one of many trails at Mt. Diablo State Park. The San Francisco Bay are has an infinite number of locations for all types of exercisers to choose from. Even with this surplus, there is one location that would probably not capture an exerciser's attention. The location is a cemetery.

The Mountain View Cemetery is a hidden gem located in the Piedmont area of Oakland, CA. Erected in 1863 by Frederick Law Olmstead, Mountain View Cemetery is the resting place of many notable figures from the San Francisco Bay and beyond. In fact, the cemetery has a “Millionaires’ Row” as a tribute to the wealthy individuals that are buried there.

So, why should you plan to engage in your next work out at the Mountain View Cemetery?

  •  The miles and miles of winding paths are ideal for hikers, walkers, cyclists, runners, and for walking your dog
  • The landscape is stunning
  • You can challenge yourself on the numerous hills
  •  It’s an ideal training area for 5K, 10K and marathon runs
  • It is not heavily populated with people, as you would probably imagine
  • The panoramic views of the San Francisco Bay and skylines from the hilltops are breathtaking
  • It’s a combination of history, exercise and beauty all rolled into one experience

Once you have visited and experienced Mountain View Cemetery, you will also agree that cemeteries aren’t only for the deceased.

If you have visited the Mountain View Cemetery, let's hear about your experience.
