UPDATE TODAY: ADF ATTORNEY ALAN SEARS WITH MICHAEL MEDVED HERE.

It took 25 years but 1984 has finally arrived, and with it, the fulfillment of Orwell's prophecy.

"The more the Party is powerful, the less it will be tolerant: the weaker the opposition, the tighter the despotism. There will be no loyalty, except loyalty towards the Party. There will be no love, except the love of Big Brother."

Today, the President signed Hate Crimes legislation into law.  Of course, these new laws are installed for the general welfare, the betterment of society.  Never mind they are entirely duplicative, serving no purpose when it comes to improving law enforcement.

It is already against the law to hurt someone, kill someone or slander someone, regardless of race, sexual orientation or disability.  Now however, if you say for example, that you think homosexuality is a sin, you can be brought up on charges.  Your thought, your expressed opinion, has hurt someone's feelings you see, and this makes you a criminal.   In fact, as of today, even writing this way subjects this author to special scrutiny, and the possibility of prosecution.

Hold the phone, insists our dear leader!  We only wish to squash hate not prosecute thought or destroy freedom of speech!

Despite assurances, hate crimes law means, if you are shown to possess discriminatory thoughts toward certain people, during the commission of a crime, or otherwise, you will be prosecuted under a new set of rules carrying more stringent penalties.

Does anyone really believe this new set of laws will either act as a deterent or change opinions when it comes to issues of conscience such as the controversy surrounding gay marriage?

From Orwell's 1984:  "There is a word in Newspeak" said Syme, "I don't know whether you know it: duckspeak, to quack like a duck. It is one of those interesting words that have two contradictory meanings. Applied to an opponent, it is abuse; applied to someone you agree with, it is praise."...
