Seven skyscrapers built during Stalin’s time are an iconic part of Moscow's skyline. These seven magnificent structures have become known as ~ Stalin's Seven Sisters, Stalin's teeth, the seven pyramids and Moscow's crowns.
On October 29, 2009 Pravda.Ru reported that Moscow historians believe Stalin ordered them built to show the world the strength and power of the Soviet Union. They also say Stalin decided to build the skyscrapers in accordance with “astrological rules”.
It seems these historians believe Stalin planned to re-build Moscow in the form of the Zodiac and the metro loop line with its 12 stations (signs) and nine skyscrapers (planets) ~ all topped with stars ~ were designed for that purpose.
Moscow was celebrating its 800-year anniversary when Stalin signed a decree regarding the construction of Moscow's skyscrapers. Though the initial plan called for nine skyscrapers be built along the Garden Ring Road (the Sadovoye Ring), framing Moscow's historic downtown, and the foundations for all nine were laid on the same day ~ only seven were completed.
In the place designated for the eighth skyscraper stands the Rossia Hotel. The Soviet Palace, which was to have a central place among the skyscrapers, was never completed and today the Cathedral of Christ the Savior stands in its place.
The Pravda.Ru article goes on to reveal several legends about the Seven Sisters. One of the most interesting says that “suicide rates among out-of-town students who live in the University skyscraper are very high since the energy of the building has a negative effect on them. Students jump out of the high floors of the building because of undivided love, failed exams, or fights with their friends.” (I have to wonder which of the planets this skyscraper represents.)
