Robert Springsteen and Michael Scott walked out of court free men on Wednesday. Both were previously convicted of the 1991 Austin, Texas slaying of five teenage girls at a yogurt shop, infamously known as the Yogurt Shop Murders. The girls were bound, gagged and burned during the December 6, 1991 incident. Springsteen was originally sentenced to death, while Scott received a life sentence.
The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals previously vacated their convictions, leaving the men awaiting a January retrial. A judge on Wednesday, however, dismissed the charges after the state was unable to match DNA evidence left at the scene with either of the defendants.
Following Wednesday’s hearing, Austin News (KXAN) reported Travis County District Attorney Rosemary Lehmberg as saying, “Given that we now have unknown DNA evidence in the case, I believe it would be imprudent and in fact unfair to proceed to trial at this time."
By dismissing the charges, the judge left open the door to possibly retrying the men at a later time. Lehmberg believes that they will find a match to the DNA someday, and when they do, the evidence will point to an accomplice of the two men. She continues to assert that both men are guilty.
