The images and symbolism coming from Berlin yesterday on the 20th anniversary of the collapse of the Berlin Wall were striking. They brought back the emotional feelings tied to people tasting the power of liberty for the first time. Their rush to the West as the cement pillars fell confirmed that the proper moral state of mankind is to be free.
So too is this true of Washington D.C.'s school-aged children when it comes to education. As we currently are having a great debate over political entitlements one fact is settled. It is the right of our offspring to attend schools that will prepare them for success and will permit them to contribute to the rest of society.
In the nation's capital kids have been deprived of that education for decades. Not even a Supreme Court ruling over 50 years ago could ensure that blacks and whites in this city receive that to which they are guaranteed simply because they exist.
DCPS has made some progress but even the Chancellor admits that many of her facilities are doing a terrible job. The charter movement has definitely helped raise the bar but some are caught up in the ego of founders or the boosting of market share. Therefore, our students and their parents must be allowed the freedom to choose the school of their choice.
This is why the Opportunity Scholarship Program is so important. It provides a way out specifically for our disadvantaged students. It is a life preserver to the future that all of us would want for our own children.
Let us use this anniversary to renew our determination not only continue, but to increase participation in, the Opportunity Scholarship Program.
