Starbucks offering $2 iced drinks after 2:00 pm, but there's a catch

August 5, 12:12 PM

Iced deliciousness has never been so cheap.  (Source)
You have to hang on to your "treat receipt" proving you purchased something earlier in the morning.

If your brain works like mine does, it's usually only after something with espresso in it and by now you're wondering how long it will be before you read "beat the heat, keep your treat receipt".  I know.  I know.

Here's the scoop from the Seattle Post Intelligencer:

Starting Tuesday, Starbucks Corp. will take a promotion previously confined to Seattle, Miami and Chicago and make it national.

To invigorate business during sluggish afternoons, the company is offering $2 cold 16- ounce drinks after 2 p.m. to people who bought something in the morning.

Starbucks baristas will stamp a "treat receipt" on morning receipts. A cold 16- ounce beverage costs up to $4 in the U.S., meaning customers save up to $2.

In mid-July, Starbucks rolled out regional promotions that varied in scope and length. But customers have been demanding consistency in promotions, said Brad Stevens, Starbucks' vice president of customer relationship management.

"We really want people to come back in the afternoons," he said. "The neat thing about this particular promotion, it really allows the barista to engage with the customer in the morning."

The promotion was well received in Seattle, Chicago and Miami, he said. It lasts from Tuesday until Sept. 2.

In other company news, former Starbucks Coffee International President Jim Alling signed an agreement that gives him a year's salary in a lump sum, plus a year's worth of COBRA health coverage, Starbucks said Monday in a federal filing.

Alling's annual salary was about $600,000, according to a separate year-old filing.

Alling left July 29 in a company shake-up that included cutting 1,000 office positions and realigning Starbucks' leadership team.

He also will receive 12 months of outplacement services worth up to $14,000.

In return, Alling released any claims against Starbucks, agreed to not work for a competing business and promised confidentiality about his time at Starbucks.

Alling joined in September 1997 and became president of Starbucks Coffee International 10 years later. Chief Operating Officer Martin Coles replaces him in that role – a position that Coles held before.

Coles joined Starbucks in April 2004 as president of Starbucks Coffee International, but left that position to become chief operating officer in September 2007.
