The Smurfs were created 50 years ago

Quick trivia: What was the name of the evil wizard Gargamel's cat? I'll tell you at the end of the post, so think while you read.

Remember the Smurfs? Created fifty years ago, the blue ones have entertained millions of children worldwide and now they are headed for the big screen!

However, as with the bastardization of Alvin and the Chipmunks recently, they couldn't just make a Smurf movie. They had to "make it better". From the BBC article:

The as-yet-untitled film will combine live action and animation.

"We're very excited to introduce a new generation to Papa Smurf and the other Smurfs in all of their glory," said Columbia president Doug Belgrad.
Live action!? Why?
Here's hoping it's not awful because the Smurfs deserve better than that. In fact, here's hoping it's Smurftacular!
