A Bamboo Bike?
A Bamboo Bike?

Is bamboo the wave of the future? Well, if you look around I think you would say it is the wave of the present. From flooring to bikes, it seems that everyone is going green with the fastest growing plant on earth.
At the Interbike Trade Expo in Las Vegas last September, Kilowatt bikes showed off their bamboo bikes. An amazing thing to think about, but once you see this bike you'll be glad they did. You'll find yourself touching it to see if it is really bamboo. This surely can't be that annoying thing that pops up in your backyard and grows like a weed on steroids.
They make three styles of these bikes. One is a casual mountain bike style. It was my favorite for everyday rideablity. It weighs in at 28 pounds and pairs the Nexuss twist shifter with DeOre derailers. The second is called a Mini and is just a blast to look at, with its smaller frame and 20 inch wheels it resembles a folding bike that peirced it's ear and got a tattoo at age fourteen. Finally their flagship bike is also a casual mountain bike style, but with an electric motor, because sometimes you just don't feel like pedaling. They all come in black and bamboo combo color. But, don't let the bamboo fool you, these bamboo with carbon fiber component frames will withstand 2,000 pounds of pressure and absorb the bumps of the road nicely.
So, maybe it's time we reduced our carbon footprint with this completely renewable, sustainable, and recyclable material. I suppose the exercise couldn't hurt us either.
