Sigourney Weaver stars as the narrator in the new film Acid Test which is available online for free right here. Amidst stunning underwater cinematography, Sigourney Weaver joins scientists and fishermen in the movie Acid Test to explain the effects of excess atmospheric carbon on the oceans. Scroll down to watch Sigourney Weaver in Acid Test now. While many people associate reducing one’s carbon footprint with global warming containment, the issue of ocean acidification is a completely separate issue that may be equally harmful to the planet.
What is Ocean Acidification?
The waters of the ocean typically have a pH level of 8.1 which means that ocean water is alkaline in nature. The shelled creatures of the ocean take advantage of this fact to extract chemicals from the ocean water with which to build their calcium carbonate shells. This includes everything from clams to lobsters, from tiny terapods to the ancient nautilus. Additionally, coral reefs are built from the calcium carbonate skeletons of corals.
How Does Ocean Acidification Affect Ocean Creatures?
Shelled creatures such as terapods and other zooplankton form the basis of the ocean’s food chain. These tiny creatures are eaten by everything from bait fish to the largest baleen whales. If the ocean loses all or even a significant percentage of the amount of shelled creatures that inhabit it, the entire chain of ocean life loses one of it’s main sources of food, and virtually every ocean creature is affected.
When carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere, it comes into contact with the ocean over 75% of the Earth’s surface, Sigourney Weaver and others tell us in Acid Test. When it does come into contact with the ocean, it is absorbed into the ocean’s normally alkaline waters. Adding carbon dioxide to ocean water is a chemical recipe for creating acid. Acid, of course, is the opposite of alkaline. Calcium carbonate shells of sea creatures dissolve when they are not in an alkaline environment. They also have trouble forming in the first place.
How can Ocean Acidification be Measured?
The effect of carbon on the ocean’s pH levels is directly measurable. The acidification of the ocean can be directly measured all over the globe. It is not a judgment call, and it does not rely on the erudite congregation of data from diverse and little understood sources to prove that it is happening. Basic chemistry that we learned in high school is the only tool required to measure ocean acidification and shows that it is certainly occurring and shows the continuing trend over time.
How Does Ocean Acidification Affect Me?
Whatever one’s view of global warming, the effects of man’s carbon emissions on the oceans is direct and measurable. Ocean acidification will have profound effects upon the lives of everyone on the planet. Rising costs of not only shellfish, but also the fish that are upstream of them in the food chain. The people of nations that rely upon fishing for their main food supply will experience severe shortages this century. Fishermen in developed countries will find it impossible to haul in profitable harvests. The ocean's bounty and its beauty will be destroyed. The ocean will continue to lose it's capacity to absorb harmful greenhouse gases and global warming will accelerate rapidly.
What is Sigourney Weaver's Message in the Movie Acid Test?
In the movie Acid Test, Sigourney Weaver explains not only the problem and consequences of ocean acidification, but also discusses ways to make massive reductions in our carbon emissions that are the main cause of the problem. Ocean acidification is a problem that has been understood for years, but one that has received little media and public attention. Sigourney Weaver and the free movie Acid Test hope to increase public awareness of the problem of ocean acidification and to add even more impetus to move away from sources of energy production that rely on the burning of fossil fuels and the wholesale emissions of carbon dioxide.
