The Dead Yeast Society, Lafayette's very own homebrew club, will be hosting the American Homebrew Association's 11th annual "Teach a Friend to Homebrew Day". Local homebrewers hope to inspire you beer connoisseurs to take the next step, and learn to brew. The event will be located on the side of Marcello's Wine Market and should start when the store opens this Saturday, November 7th at 10 AM.
The club will set-up a homebrewing system and brew two types of beer. One will be an all-grain batch where all the fermentable sugars are coaxed from nothing but malts and specialty grains. The process is a bit more complicated than that, but that's the whole point, to answer all your questions and show you that it is easy to brew your own beer at home.
The second brew will be an extract kit, supplied by Marcello's Wine Market, Lafayette's "Local Homebrew Supply Shop". This is how almost all homebrewers begin, by brewing an extract kit in their kitchen. The manufacturer of the extract kit has done most of the hard work for you. They have already extracted all the sugars from the grains and the result is a can of thick sweet "wort" (pronounced wurt). All you have to do is add water and hops and boil. Then add yeast and wait for some of the best beer you've ever tasted, that you made yourself.
Some of the club members will have some of their homemade Pumpkin Ale on hand for you to taste as well. So, bring a lawn chair and join in on the fun as the club introduces you to the obsession (sometimes also called a hobby) called homebrewing.
