Second Life is a virtual online world which allows people to come together to chat, perform, meet new people, and travel the grid.
As it expanded, it became a popular virtual world where professors can teach classes, entertainers can perform in front of a crowd, and even be a hub for entrepreneurs to design, sell, and trade various in-game valuables.
As large organizations began to use Second Life to offer classes, training programs, and meetings for its employees, Linden Lab began the development of the Second Life Enterprise. The Second Life Enterprise is currently in a ‘behind-the-firewall’ beta testing program which starts at $55,000. This allows companies and government agencies to experience the immense benefits that Second Life offers to their businesses.
Mirroring the current virtual world, users are represented by 3D avatars in Second Life Enterprise. The environment includes a variety of conference rooms, meeting spaces, and event locations where users can work together with their avatars and communicate through text chat and VOIP. Just imagine the cost-effectiveness of this business integration – companies will be able to save money because their budget will not have to be allocated to conference space rentals, commuting expenses, catering, printing, and other accommodations!
So far, businesses who are participating in the beta test program are singing praises to the San Francisco based firm, Linden Lab. Just check out some of the reviews (source):
"Virtual worlds have the potential to provide a safer, more cost-effective approach to some of the Navy's current mission areas… Hosting the Second Life Enterprise on a secured network allows us to conduct training, concept of operations exercises and collaborative engineering activities using sensitive information in safety." -- Douglas Maxwell, Program Technology Lead for NUWC Metaverse Strategic Initiative
"Second Life Enterprise version offers a great combination of collaboration, content creation and communications tools and resources… We were one of the early adopters of the Second Life platform, and having that technology behind the firewall gives us the opportunity to expand our use of the platform enterprise-wide." -- Francoise Legoues, Vice President of Innovation Initiatives for IBM.
Linden Lab expects to develop more business products, as well as a Second Life Work Marketplace by next year.
