Shopping for a new fragrance can be a huge undertaking if you do not have a strategy for choosing that fragrance. You can walk into most retail stores and find shelves filled with different fragrances. There can be many factors that go into making the final decision for that purchase. Harper's Bazaar has taken on the task of providing helpful tips for selecting the scent that represents you. There are plenty of resources available to assist you in locating the fragrance that mirrors you. Here is a short list of tips generated to take the fear out of shopping for scents.
1. Know your preferred scents and generate a list of those scents. For example, some preferred scents may be flowers, baby powder, or even an unconventional scent like tobacco.
2. See what categories your preferred scents fall under. There are about 4 general categories for fragrances. These general categories are florals (rose, gardenia, jasmine, etc.), woody (woods and moss), fresh (citrus, marine, green grass/leaves, etc), and oriental (spices, vanilla, patchouli, etc).
3. Work with a sales associate. Sales associates work with the product on a daily and can educate you on the differences and similarities between different fragrances.
4. Try it out on blotters first. If you don't like the scent on blotters, you will not like it on your skin.
5.Try the fragrances you like most on your wrist, but do not try on more than 4 fragrances at a time.
6. Take home samples and seek the opinions of your friends and family. Your signature fragrance will be a flop if it clears a room once you apply it. Also taking samples home will allow you to do independent research to ensure the fragrance represents just what it is intended to represent.
7. Wear your new scent with pride!
