This may sound a bit hokey, but when I was younger, not young, I used to play "Ghosts in the Graveyard" and once I even slept in the cemetery until me and my friends were too cold and too scared. We had a really odd concept of what was fun when the girls we hung out with were out of town. The point is that the cemetery can be a cool place to explore in the dark during a good Halloween evening.
Luckily, my half-morbid ideas of fun were replaced by my love of photography, at least until I realized that I could combine the two. The images within your local cemetery can be some of the most intriguing that you may take.
One evening I decided to park just outside the Salt Lake City Cemetery, located within the Avenues of Downtown Salt Lake City, Utah. I was all by myself; alone with my camera. The images I produced were not the most amazing images Iv'e ever shot, but the satisfaction of staying until I was finished made those photographs some of my most memorable.
If you are looking for a fun and eerie trip on Halloween night, I suggest your local cemetery. Take a tripod with you and the nerve to stay out among the thoughts that will accumulate as you shoot alone in the dark. As you set up the tripod, prepare the camera and frame the shot , a nerve-racking and ghostly feeling hovers, as the unknown looms directly behind you. Have the nerve to be patient, as a good shot will take time to mold. The whistle of the breeze blowing through the trees, the bats in flight, dogs and the human adolecent creatures entertaining their own thoughts as they play in the dark all add up to noises that the imagination runs away with, making the hair on the back of your neck stand on end.
This may sound childish and wrong - but thats because it is! It's Halloween people! Get out, do something fun, do something crazy, but take a camera. Your local cemetery awaits your coming. Be creative and I promise you'll have a story to tell. Keep in mind that there are people with unstable mentalities or those fun and rare individuals with ritualistic dance ceremonies out there that you may run into. You may think that this only happens in the movies, but it's real.
You may come home having taken the shot of a lifetime and a fine piece of art or you may just dead-end up on the five O'clock evening news.
Happy Halloween!
