Upon first learning of The Pavilion one may gawk and roll their eyes at the undeniable fact that this play is about a high school reunion. One may wonder why anyone would want to pay to watch the unfolding of chaos as individuals revisit the mandatory prison-type era known to the common man as high school. Why, oh why? Simply because Craig Wright, writer of “Lost”, “Six Feet Under”, and “Dirty Sexy Money”, delivers his audience through history and time to a place of how such chaos can come to be. This play is not about trivial high school dilemmas. This is a play about people. “People are funny,” comments Andie Rigler, director of The Pavilion. “People do funny things in their everyday lives and even in the funniest things, there is sadness,”
A nominee for the 2005-2006 Drama Desk Awards, The Pavilion is about two people, Peter and Kari, voted once in their senior year to be the cutest couple. Now at their 20th high school reunion they lead separate lives after a crucial decision when Peter left town. Is there forgiveness? Is there such a thing as second chances? All three actors, in conversation, agreed that this play is an actor’s dream simply because of the organic language and the room for ultimate discoveries. One character actually plays every other high school graduate totaling to 13 named characters and 40 embodied characters.
“I cast really well. I really have wonderful actors,” gushes Rigler, the proud director. “But really, the fourth character in the room is the pavilion itself,”
Truly enough, the setting of the piece, designed by John van der Meer takes place in a building that steeps itself in the town’s history. One may go as far to say that if the pavilion is the 4th character, then it was nuanced and coached by time and history in this production.
