It is hard to give this little community anything but a rave review but I have to be honest. Things are odd there! During the day the town is a quaint little place built around a railroad and known to have "the best water on Earth." You will even find a couple of beautiful waterfalls very near town to explore.
Antique stores and little thrift stores line the streets and are fun to check out and most of the people seem friendly even if they seem to stare at you like you don’t really belong. It is a bit hard to not feel out of place.
Be warned however that the freaks seem to come out at night in Dunsmuir and people become really strange and a tad scary. We saw a man that looked like a mix of Bigfoot and The Hunchback of Notre Dame, a group of kids trying their hardest to make the entire county smell like the marijuana that they were smoking, a crazy lady that appeared to be attached to the wall outside of a bar and we met the rudest shop owner in the world at the local computer store. We also witnessed a drug deal right on Main Street! Nice job officers!
One other thing that we noticed was that the locals don't seem to take well to tourists. We went by a community BBQ and were prepared to drop $22.00 to support the local high school football team but my partner and I both felt stared at and uneasy there. If we had stayed any longer I think that we would have both ended up tied to the train tracks.
Don't drive past Dunsmuir. Stop and support the locals. Just don't stop at night. We heard several stories of corruption by the local police force. Be careful how you drive and where you go. Some of the places in Dunsmuir were fantastic! This community is a crazy mixed bag of tricks!
If you find yourself hungry in Dunsmuir definitely stop at Burger Barn! This roadside diner is a real wonderful slice of Americana and a must-visit on your way out of town!
