If you are choosing to learn how to read tarot cards and intend to use them only for yourself, you may want to consider oracle cards instead.

If you are choosing to learn how to read tarot cards and intend to use them to read others, oracle cards may be a good tool for you, especially if you are a beginner.

There are hundreds, if not thousands, of oracle cards decks to choose from.

One theory is that oracle cards are much simpler to use that tarot cards in that the images are very often accompanied with specific words and/or phrases. The result is that the reader (you) has to do very little interpretation of the symbols on the cards.

Oracle cards are a WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) divination tool whereas tarot cards typically have far more in-depth symbols from which the reader must cull interpretive messages.

Some tarot cards readers do not feel the symbolism on oracle cards is multidimensional enough to be utilized for a "real" reading.

Other tarot cards readers prefer the usage of oracle cards because they (the tarot cards reader) are predominately psychic and the oracle cards serve as reference material for the reading rather than the being the foundation of the whole reading.

Not all tarot cards readers are psychic.

Many are simply very learned about the symbolism of their particular tarot cards deck and piece together divinatory messages for their client based solely on that knowledge.

It is important to note many, many experienced tarot readers advise against reading for oneself in that we are invested in our own outcome and not able to view ourselves or our lives objectively.

The next article in the series How to read Tarot Cards is How to read Tarot Cards (part IV): Preparing your deck will explore several idealogies pertaining to the handling, care and preparation of your new deck of tarot cards or oracle cards.
