As this is Vegan Month, the last article posted was a few recommmendations for eating vegan in Louisville. I decided to take the challenge myself and try out one of these restaurants and Zen Garden was the winner.
Located on Frankfort Avenue in Crescent Hills, Zen Garden is a converted house that serves a solely vegetarian menu of Asian dishes for lunch and dinner. There are probably 12 tables inside and on a Tuesday night about half were filled. The restaurant is open every day of the week except Sunday from 11am until 10 or 11pm (on the weekends).
The menu offers a range of different Asian inspired dishes of each the soup, noodle and rice variety. They also have a few sandwich options. Daily lunch specials are offered. For dinner, Any of the entrees can be made into a combination meal that comes with egg roll, soup and rice. Zen Garden will pack up anything "to-go" for all your rainy night cravings. For drinks, they have a several wonderful tea offerings, though you will find many more tea offerings at the sister location Zen Tea House a few doors up the street. That location serves a modest light fare that is also all vegetarian but boasts an amazing tea list. For the true tea lovers you can also do a tea "flight" of four different teas.
Perhaps the best part about experiecing a meal at Zen Garden is knowing where the profits go. Unlike most restaurants who keep the profits for themselves, Zen Garden gives all profits back to charity. The recipients vary but the three main ones provide relief to tsunami survivors, communities in Nepal, and southeast Asian immigrants to Louisville. What more of an excuse do you need to go out to eat today?!
