The British kings of comedy, Monty Python, are 40 years old. Their humor is as fresh today as it was decades ago. I was too young to watch Monty Python in the 70’s but I do remember my brother and his best mate listening to an LP with “Spam.”
At photography college we watched the then banned “Life of Brian” and wondered why such a funny film could ever be seen as threatening or insulting to some church loving folk. Or was it just the “censors” who were, as usual, making the grown up decisions about what we could and could not watch?
In the 80’s I watched a televised Monty Python Live at The Hollywood Bowl. Monty Python paved the way for every comedian that followed. Although some of what followed had dated, Monty Python remained fresh and intelligent with first class writing and outrageous characters that are funny because they are so close to the truth. Funny voices, funny walks, hilarious songs and men in frocks, intelligent humor that every university student adored.
I’ve lived in the USA for a few years now and Americans always ask me the same two questions and deliver the same bold statement as a sign of camaraderie:
1) Are you Irish?
2) Are you Australian?
3) I love Monty Python!
Not all red heads are Irish.
Only Americans can’t tell the difference between an English and an Australian accent.
Yes, I love Monty Python too and it’s wonderful to share the love.
Here’s to 40 more years!
