New York, NY – Late Wednesday, the New York Yankees won game six of Major League Baseball’s World Series against the Philadelphia Phillies 7-3, earning them the championship. Hideki Matsui, who had 6 RBIs in game six, was named Most Valuable Player. This is the first time the Yankees had won the championship in nine years, and the 27th World Series title overall in team history.

The World Series win comes in the inaugural season of the new Yankee Stadium. The Yankees also won the World Series in the inaugural season of the old Yankee Stadium in 1923.

About the win, MVP Matsui said, “Winning the championship is such a great feeling. I guess you can say that this is the best moment of my life right now.”  For the series, Matsui batted .615 and had a total of three home runs. His 6 RBIs in last night’s game tied a single game World Series record set by former New York Yankees' player Bobby Richardson in 1960. He is the first Japanese player to be named MVP.

For several of the Yankees’ players, Captain Derek Jeter, pitcher Andy Pettitte, catcher Jorge Posada, and closing pitcher Mariano Rivera, this championship marks their fifth with the Yankees. From 1996 to 2000, they were on Yankees teams which won 4 out of 5 World Series.

Concerning the series against the Phillies, Yankees manager Joe Girardi said, “They're an extremely tough opponent.” He added, “They won the World Series last year and we were fortunate enough to win it this year. But it's a great ballclub with a lot of heart.”

"This is their 27th World Series championship, the most in American sports. Congratulations to the New York Yankees.”  Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig stated as he awarded the trophy to the Yankees.

At the end of the game, the scoreboard in the stadium read, “This one's for the Boss.”  Hal Steinbrenner, general managing partner and son of owner George Steinbrenner said, “I hope he feels special,” referring to his father who has been ill. “This team, the entire postseason, has been focused, to win this for him.”
