This afternoon marked the release of the first official information regarding Tiger Woods 11, EA Sports’ golfing franchise. The official site is now live and it contains a brief blog by Mike DeVault, lead designer of the series. In the blog, DeVault outlines some of the new features for ’11 including variable wind, increased pin locations and realistic shot spreading.
While there are certainly some “fluff” features, it appears as if many of the features in this year’s title are aiming at making the game more difficult and presenting users with a more realistic experience. While PGA Tour members are certainly the best golfers in the world they can never be quite as precise as their virtual counterparts. I would expect that the days of -20 scores are numbered as the team appears to be approaching a more “sim” style of gameplay. That being said, it will eventually boil down to how well the team is able to execute these features and gamer response.
Probably more interesting than the news regarding the title will be the way in which EA approaches this year’s version. With Tiger on an indefinite hiatus from competition, how will marketing be handled? Also, it’s hard not to notice that the cover art includes Rory McIlroy, marking the first time that a Tiger Woods cover has been shared and possibly hinting at the future of the franchise. While Tiger Woods certainly has carried the marketing value for EA thus far, EA may try to downplay his role for a year and gage consumer response. Regardless of the outcome, this story is certainly one to keep on eye on throughout the remainder of 2010.
Tiger Woods 11 will be available June 8th.
