Noble Knob is one of those great bald peaks that allows a stunning vista in all directions.
Situated just north of Mt. Rainier National Park, the 6,000-foot high point is a perfect lunch destination on a clear day. Once the site of a forest service lookout, it offers a perfect view of Mt. Rainier in one direction, a variety of peaks beckoning from others, and the possibility of mountain goats and elk in nearby meadows.
For the shortest hiking route take Highway 410 through Enumclaw for 30 miles and turn left onto Corral Pass Road (Forest Service road #7174). This road is easy to miss, since the signpost is gone while heading east. If you pass all the inviting old log cabins on the left, turn around and drive slowly back past them. The #7174 sign is visible heading west. #7174 is not a pleasant country road. It's full of potholes and large boulders. A slow pace is warranted.
After the 6.5 mile ascent you'll find a small open parking area on the left. The trail from that point features 3.5 miles of pleasant ups and downs, through meadows and forest, with large patches of huckleberries, peeks at the mountain and views of vast areas begging to be explored. When you come to a junction of three trails, take the middle one, which leads up and around to the top of the Knob.
For maps and a Northwest Forest Pass, stop at the White River Ranger District office in Enumclaw. It's on your right as you head out of Enumclaw on 410.
