When it's one of those cold and lonely nights, and my head is full of lost love and nostalgic fantasies, I seek the warm comfort of a woman's touch at a small hole in the wall on a side street not many pass and little are familiar with to titillate my taste buds with checkbook friendly Thai Cuisine... What did you think I was going say?
Asian Plates is located in the barrio of Westlake on Maryland street, off of Alvarado between 3rd and 6th. The Thai inspired restaurant knows that it's location isn't great, but strives to be the best that it can be. And, I'd say it does a damn job at it. It's interior is a mix between an upscale bodega and a wannabe West Hollywood sushi joint. A soda refrigerator and an ice cream freezer adorn one wall while the opposite wall is decked out with an exotic fish tank and potted plants. Make sure you grab a window seat. The view out front is riveting.
While the employee's don't go out of their way to kiss your ass, the service is quick and painless. The food is delicious and well priced. The Panang curry with bell peppers and pork will pull anyone out of a bad day, especially when it costs $6.95 a plate. If you’re a vegetarian, they'll cook your food with separate oil. I recommend their take out, but then again, I don't like soda and I could give a rat's ass about fish tanks.
Author's Tip: If you work in Westlake, Asian Plates is a great place to grab a quick lunch.
