Nazareth Restaurant, located at the corner of 161 (Dublin-Granville) and Cleveland Avenue offers some of the best gyros in Columbus. The meat, the typical combination of lamb and beef, is tender, flavorful and fresh at all times of the day. The restaurant thrives on regular customers, who in turn seem to thrive on these tasty but (a little) messy sandwiches as well as the friendly and courteous staff.
The tzatziki, a house made blend of herbs and yogurt, is far better than average. The gyros are available in three varieties, one with less meat, one with an average amount of meat and an extra meat variety.
The hummus is also made on site, and isn't meant for those who don't enjoy garlic. It has a healthy drizzle of olive oil and is liberally sprinkled with paprika. The hummus is accompanied by warmed pita points.
Nazareth isn't a one hit wonder, while the gyros are fantastic, the menu includes Middle Eastern favorites like stuffed grape leaves, kabobs and falafel. With all of those offerings, it may seem difficult, if not impossible to save room for dessert. The baklava and other desserts made with phyllo are tasty, but they are not made at the restaurant and are not exceptional in any way.
Nazareth is currently located in the Plaza at the northeast corner of Cleveland and 161, but will be celebrating 20 years in business by moving across the street to the former Chili's location. That move is expected to happen around Thanksgiving.
Nazareth is open Monday through Thursday from 11a-8p, and 11a-9p Friday and Saturday.
