Michael Jackson would have been working on his stage presentation of the song "Dirty Diana" on the day he died. This is according to Kenny Ortega, the director of the film This Is It which opened last week and shows Mr. Jackson rehearsing for a planned 50 shows in London and creating the stage effects for several of his songs.
According to Mr. Ortega in an interview at Moviesonline.ca:
"The day that Michael died, we were waiting for him to come in to block him into 'Dirty Diana,' which was at the end of 'Dirty Diana,' he stepped into an illusion and before your eyes went up in smoke and then suddenly appeared completely on the other side of the stage rising up on the cherry picker and out over to the audience for 'Beat It.':
They were at the Staples Center working on the preliminaries of this effect with an aerialist and an assistant choreographer standing in for Michael until he would arrive later in the day, when they heard the news. Everything stopped.
According to Mr. Ortega, the night before he died Mr. Jackson had told him things were really coming together for the show, and he loved it. He was really looking forward to working on the illusion the next day, Mr. Ortega says. The movie version of This Is It opened October 28, 2009 and was to show in theaters for only two weeks. However, box office sales and the need to push the DVD release to 2010 prompted distributors to extend the theater run of the film through the Thanksgiving holiday.
The movie has already broken records as the highest grossing concert film ever made.
