Michele Collins, the Swedish-based clown who began her training at the Dell Arte School of Mime and Comedy in Blue Lake, California, has been given the Gnistan Adlerbertska Kultstitendier award (“Gnistan” translates as “Sparkle”) by the Sälskapet Association in Sweden. The committee chose Michele for “making sense of nonsense.” The award gives her “confidence and [the] motivation to continue." She is currently working on her masters degree, identifying and defining her work to help her with future development and to “hopefully support others who work in the same field.”
At Dell Arte, Michele studied under the tutelage of Carlo Mazzone Clemente and John Paul Cook. Many of her fellow classmates were from Sweden and upon graduation, at the age of 23, she moved to Sweden with them, where they started the troupe Typhoon Tivoli in the 80's. Since then, Tivoli has played on streets, in clubs, and at festivals all over Europe. While touring with Tivoli in the 80's and 90's, Michele continued her studies in clown and physical theater under master teacher Phillippe Gaulier in Paris and Gotenborg.
Michele started creating solo works after having her first child, Julia Liv Kylen-Collins. She performed her solo show Swan Lake while pregnant with her second child, Lucy Josephine Kylen-Collins. Michele uses the theme of “domestic bliss” to inspire her works.
She is an inspiration to clowns everywhere.
