According to Wikipedia, Lima, Peru has been on the map since January 18, 1535. Lima was founded by a Spanish conquistador named Francisco Pizarro, and ultimately became the capital of Peru. Lima is currently Peru's largest city, and one of the largest in all of Latin America.
However, electronic-rock legend, Depeche Mode singer, David Gahan, isn't quite familiar. Gahan expressed his likely genuine and sincere thanks to his fan during a recent concert in Peru's capitol, which would have been fine had the singer known where he was. According to the Hollywood Reporter online, the Depeche Mode front-man exclaimed, "Thank you, Chile!" to the crowd of more than 30,000 excited revelers last week. Luckily, most didn't seem to notice or care about the gaffe.
This is now the third time Lima, Peru has been shorted when visited by major-label musical acts. According to the Hollywood Reporter article, "Depeche Mode Singer Thanks Wrong Country", both Alanis Morissette and a female singer of a Mexican pop band have previously improperly named the country they were performing in during their Peruvian concerts.
