It can be a long road to a championship. This weekend, the Oly Rollers traveled 2850 miles to Philadelphia to take a shot at winning their first title. And they were able to pull it off with a 178-100 victory over the legendary Texas Rollergirls earlier today.
Texas took early control of the bout, inching their way out to a 3-0 lead after two jams. But that's when Oly took off. Blonde An Bitchin struck the first blow with a big 7-0 jam in the third run of the game. Tannibal Lector posted a 5-0 grand slam run in the 4th. Then Atomatrix drove the first nail into the Texas coffin with a 12-0 decision in the fifth jam. Over those three runs, the Oly Rollers went on a 24-0 scoring run and had a 21 point lead.
Over the years, Texas has been known as a physical team that is hard to score on. But in the first half alone, the Oly Rollers posted four double-digit scoring runs and were shut-out only 5 times in 20 jams. Meanwhile, the Oly defense did an outstanding job of shutting down dangerous TXRG jammers Rice Rocket, Olivia Shootin' John and Bloody Mary. In those 20 jams, Texas was shutout in 11 of them and scored more than 2 points in only four of those jams. At halftime, Oly held a commanding 95-40 lead.
Texas came out stronger in the 2nd half, taking a slim 21-19 run over the first five jams. But once again, Oly's defense clamped down while their offense kicked it back into gear as Atomatrix and Heffer went on a 17-0 run of their own. For the most part, Texas played Oly pretty evenly on the scoreboard in the 2nd half. But the one jam that really made the score look a lot worse than it was came from the skates of Oly's Heffer who went on an 18-4 rampage in the 17th jam of the 2nd half. That scoring run essentially put the game completely away for Oly. Once the final whistle blew, the Oly Rollers had claimed the 2009 WFTDA National Championship with a 178-100 victory.
As of right now, there hasn't been any word as to who the tournament MVP was. Hopefully that will be filled-in sometime soon in the comments section below.
