If you have a carpet phobia, or are worried about allergies, a flatweave area rug might be just the solution to warm up your tile or wood floors. Area rugs provide the soft foot comfort of carpet without the cost and permanence of covering the entire floor. They can be used to define an area in an open-concept floor plan, add color/personality, as well as protect expensive flooring surfaces.

Known for their durability and strength, flatweaves are made on a loom vs. hand-knotted. The weaving process creates a very flat pile and usually can be manufactured more quickly than hand knotted rugs. Flatweaves are also used as wall décor. Their lack of pile makes them easy to maintain, mobile and they are appreciated for their natural, textural look.

If you are in the market for a new area rug, you might recognize some of these common names that distinguish flatweaves:

  • Aubusson: known for soft and delicate colors, detailed with floral and architectural designs.
  • Dhurrie: tend to be simple rather than ornate designs, usually made in India of wool or cotton. Reversible and often used for entries.
  • Kilim: usually woven of rough wool, with Middle East origins. Characterized by bright colors, geometric patterns & shapes, with contrasting colors and also reversible.
  • Soumak: this weave utilizes a specialized embroidery technique using cotton or wool yarns. Typically more durable and expensive than dhurries and kilims. Designs include bird and botanical motifs instead of stripes or geometrics. Best for low traffic areas and often used as wall tapestries.

Flatweaves work well in today’s transitional and contemporary room-settings. Their smooth finish makes them highly desirable. Prices range from low to high end, depending upon size, weave density, design intricacy, and country of origin. Explore your options and enjoy some flatweave fun!
