Canadian native, Valerie Poxleitner, better known as Lights to the music world, has emerged in the U.S.
While her first full length CD hit stores back on October 6th, 2009 here in the states, Lights has been around awhile. Her electro-pop music was featured in Old Navy's 2008 Spring Campaign, "Lights of Love," where her electro-pop songs crept their way into our hearts. Curious to find out who this unique musician was, I googled of course, which led me to her myspace. I was surprised to find she already had a major fan base. And no wonder, the girl is beautiful and down-to-earth. She plays the keytar, the guitar, and has a naturally amazing voice that isn't altered like so many other pop stars. Check out her acoustic performances if you don't believe me.

Lights' career took off here in the states when she was asked to play in Warped Tour 2009. She also won the 2009 "Best New Artist" Juno award, which is an award presented to Canadian musicians for their artistry and achievements. She has announced a tour in the near future with Owl City, a Death Cab for Cutie sound-alike that has gained sudden popularity on the radio. A sure to be sold out show!

What is refreshing about Lights is that she is a nerd, but a cool one. She plays World of Warcraft, reads comics, and has a pet tarantula named Lance. Her hero is Wonder Woman, whom she has a large tattoo of on her back. So, not only is she a nerd, but she's sort of a bad ass. She's completely futuristic and is fascinated by space, which is seen in her music videos that all incorporate a galactic feel. There are planets, astronauts, futuristic dresses, spaceships.
Oh and did I mention she has a killer fashion sense? Old Navy loved her style so much they let her wear her own pieces for the ads she was in. That is saying something!
She mixes vintage and new pieces without paying much mind to brand names. She mixes up her look all the time. She pulls off the futuristic look in neon colors and solid lines, the hippie chic look in headbands and vintage tees, and the rocker look in combat boots and skinny jeans.
She sums up her style as "intergalactic hippie chic." Her inspiration for fashion is from her hero, Wonder Woman by wearing boots and headbands, which are her signature pieces. She has a huge collection, which is one to be admired. She can't even put a number on how many headbands she owns.
Be sure to go see her rock some fabulous pieces and sing her heart out on her upcoming tour. Also, check out her Myspace page, www.myspace.com/lights.
