Thanksgiving will be here before you know it. With all the grocery shopping and cooking that needs to be done, the house often gets overlooked. The work to get it holiday ready will be more manageable if you start now and do one room at a time.

Devote one day per room and you should be done with time to spare. Start by decluttering and cleaning each area really well.  Rearrange and bring in furniture if needed.  Add accessories.  A day or two before the big day, do a light cleaning and put out  fresh flowers.

Living room - Imagine your guests enjoying themselves in your home. The furniture arrangement should be conducive to socializing. Create conversation areas with seating.  Ideally, each guest should have a surface to put down a drink and appetizer.  Bring in additional seating and small side tables if needed.  Have coasters and cocktail napkins available.  Ideas on using autumn accessories to warm up the room.

Dining room - The table is the gathering place.  Make sure it is large enough to accommodate all of your guests. You may want to put in table leaves or add another table.  Get additional chairs if needed. Since the  centerpiece is the focal point, make it special.   When selecting materials, choose autumn colors that coordinate with  your dinnerware, glassware and general palette of the room.   If using a table runner, lay it down the center of the table lengthwise.  Add some natural seasonal elements like leaves, flowers and fruit.  Work in pillar candles of varying heights.  The centerpiece should be low enough to see the dinner guest sitting across from you.  If you have a buffet, dress it up as well.

Guest room - Take some time to make the room comfortable for your overnight guest. Do you need  new bedding? Place a chair in the corner. Make sure there is a light for reading and an alarm clock on the bedside table. If possible, provide your guest with an empty drawer and a little hanging space in the closet. Fresh flowers are always a nice touch.  If your room is packed with stuff, this article by the SF Home Organizing Examiner is  helpful.

Kitchen -  Place bowls or platters of seasonal fruit, nuts or gourds on the counter or island.  Use footed stands to vary the height.  Make a large bouquet of autumn flowers and put it on the island or where ever you think it would look nice.  Add a few  unscented candles (no scented candles near food).  Hang some harvest themed or colored dish towels.

Powder room - Place a scented candle, and a plant or fresh flowers on the vanity. Put out some luxurious hand soap and lotion. Hang fluffy hand towels.

Congratulations!  Now you can concentrate on preparing your holiday feast.
