The Texoma Children's Museum is constantly offering new and exciting opportunities to Sherman and Denison area youth. Little ones with an ear for music are now afforded the opportunity to learn to play a stringed instrument. Orchestra director for SISD, Sue Ellen Davis, provides small hands with expert instruction in an upbeat and exciting atmosphere.
At what age should a child begin learning to play an instrument? Many instructors debate over the appropriate age. According to the Suzuki method, created by Shin'ichi Suzuki, children as young as three are capable of learning instruments such as the violin on smaller versions built to fit little hands. The theory behind this early introduction is that children will be able to incorporate musical skill into their lives as easily as language was learned.
The decision is best left up to each child's parent. Only mom knows how ready or mature little miss molly is, and if the desire is there, magic can occur. For those interested, classes are held at the Texoma Children's Museum on Wednesdays at 3:45 pm. The fee is sixty-five dollars. The current session will end on December 16, 2009, but contact the museum for information regarding the next session's dates and enrollment.
