Times are tough. We here in the Dayton area know as well as anyone how challenging it can be to keep moving ahead, while the local economy and the national mood are unstable at best.
So as we approach this year's Veteran's Day - observed Wednesday, November 11th - it feels more important than ever to honor, celebrate, and appreciate the men and women who, in a myriad of ways, participate in our armed forces.
Here are some small shows of support and some big ways of taking action this Veteran's Day.
1. See a film. Or Six. The Liberty Film Festival kicks off this Wednesday, screening some of the most heralded war movies to date. Each film will be introduced by a notable keynote speaker. Visit the festival's website for film schedules, ticket information and screening locations.
2. Visit a Museum. But not just any museum - Dayton is so fortunate to be home to the National Museum of the US Air Force. Admission is always free. There is no better way to honor our veterans than by learning of their experiences and contributions.
3. Smile. In a true act of service and gratitude, Huber Heights dentist Bob Muster is participating in "Leave No Vets Behind," which offers a day of free dental services to veterans. To schedule an appointment, contact Dr. Muster's office, ABC Dental, at (937) 938-7678.
4. Eat, drink, and be merry. There are a whole host of Dayton area restaurants, bars, and hot spots that are honoring veterans this week by offering great deals and discounts. Bar Louie (The Greene) is just one example - dishing up free lunch or dinner to any active or retired military personnel, as well as collecting items to send care packages to local troops currently overseas. And of course, take every opportunity to say "thank you." We owe our veterans a tremendous debt of gratitude, and a little show of appreciation leaves everyone feeling good.
